Saint Catherine, at first named Caterina Benincasa, was created in Siena, a city in west-central Italy south of Florence. She was created on March 25, 1347, the feast of the Annunciation. She experienced a twin sister who did not live longer after her birth. Catherine was the youngest of twenty-five children. Her dad, Giacomo Benincasa, was a wealthy dyer. He lived along with his wife Lupa, the child of a then famous poet, in a spacious home which continues to be standing today. Catherine is referred to as having been a cheerful child.
