Michael Foucault's essay Panopticism was written much totally different to what would be the norm other essays that I have read. Panopticism is intended to be, as stated by Hunter, a " meticulous technical partitioningвЂќ (pg. 212). Foucault writes in this different style then almost all of the authors i have researched. He uses unique grammar and word structures which will make sense but take a while to know, as well as several use words and phrases that genuinely mean something and in his mind which means another and in many cases just randomly quotes. Coming from reading the Introduction in manners of Reading, I were able to have a better approach to understanding such tough pieces as this one. Reading with and against the grain is a very huge help as well as other methods mentioned available.
As stated in Tracey Hunter's essay, " All viewers find Foucault's prose hard going. It can help to realize that it can be necessarily challenging. In Panopticism Foucault addresses of the problem in Europe and the disciplinary system that was being used to separate individuals who were lepers, considered to had been hit by the plague. Foucault states, " If it is authentic that the leper gave surge to traditions of exemption, which to certain magnitude provided the model intended for general kind of the great Confinement, then the problem gave rise to disciplinary projects, вЂќ (pg. 211). This affirmation made me issue exactly what it is that Foucault is trying to say. Is definitely he planning to say that leprosy is the plague and that those who are lepers caused the disciplinary projects to become formed, or perhaps is this individual trying to say that it is possible that leprosy is definitely possibly the source of the trouble but it is not selected? Idea of rereading made interpretation the passageway easier and I learned idea from the Working with Difficulty part of the Advantages.
I thought that Foucault was trying to say that the plague was your basic start of the disciplinary assignments. It caused the discipline factor to be stricter, and the lepers, essentially, brought the advantages of such self-control projects. However , through continuous on inside the text to the next few sentences I noticed that lepers were not necessarily the plagued kinds, they were simply " вЂ¦caught up in the practice of rejection, of exile-enclosureвЂ¦вЂќ Therefore , the lepers were only put to suffer by the world, they actually were not the plagued ones, but simply because would perish sooner or later they were not really looked after or cared about. This kind of portion of the essay was very difficult to comprehend and without rereading the text, We probably would have had a more hard time trying to interpret the meaning from the passage.
