There have been many situations during the Vietnam War that you could call a " turning point”. Included in this are the 1963 Buddhist riots, the vicissitude against Diem in 1963, President Kennedy's 1963 killing, the Gulf of Tonkin resolution upon 1964, as well as the presidential polls in 1964. With that in mind, the attack for the USS MADDOX in 1964was also a key turning point for American participation in the warfare.

Patrol boats were sent by Vietnamese to sink the MADDOX, though the MADDOX sunk the patrol boats and left the spot (Farrell). The supposed second incident took place two days later on when the MADDOX and the USS Turner Pleasure believed themselves to be underneath attack once again though there is never virtually any evidence to aid the attack. The resolution declares " the Congress approves and supports the determination of the President, as Commander-in-Chief, to take almost all necessary measures to repel any provided attacks up against the forces states and to prevent further hostility.
